Stainless Steel Gua Sha Surface Finishes: Mirror, Satin, Matte, PVD
Mirror, brushed satin, matte and PVD finishes for stainless steel gua sha tools: how each is produced, how it wears, and which channel each suits.
Finish is the first thing a customer sees and the last thing a buyer specifies. It decides how the tool photographs, how it ages, and how much handling care it needs between polishing and packing.
This guide covers the four finishes we run on stainless steel tools, what each one is suited to, and where the specification usually goes wrong.
1. Mirror Polish
Mirror is the most reflective finish and the one most retail brands default to because it reads as premium in a product photograph.
It is produced by a sequence of progressively finer polishing passes. The risk is that a single coarse mark left earlier in the sequence stays visible in the final surface, so mirror demands the most careful handling at every stage.

A fingerprint on a mirror tool is not a defect. It is what a reflective surface does, and it is worth telling retail partners so the finish is not mistaken for a fault.
2. Brushed Satin
Satin is produced by a directional grain rather than a mirror pass. It reflects softly and hides handling marks much better than mirror.
Because it is directional, the grain needs to be set consistently relative to the tool shape. A satin tool where the grain changes direction on the same face looks unfinished.
3. Matte and Sandblasted
Matte finishes flatten reflection to near zero. They photograph evenly, do not show fingerprints, and suit design-led brands with a minimal visual language.
The trade-off is that a matte surface shows wear differently. Where a mirror tool develops fine scratches that read as normal patina, a matte tool can develop a subtle sheen where it is used most.
4. PVD Colour Coatings
Gold, rose gold and black finishes on steel are PVD coatings, not solid coloured metal. The coating is applied in a vacuum process and bonds at the surface rather than sitting on top like paint.
PVD is durable when specified and applied correctly. It is still a coating, and the honest instruction to a customer is to avoid abrasive cleaners and hard impacts on the coated face.
If you sell a coloured tool, describe the colour as a coating. Buyers who understand that do not raise returns for the wrong reason.
5. Choosing a Finish
The decision follows the channel. Retail and gifting lean mirror because it photographs well. Professional and clinical lines lean satin because it stays presentable through frequent use. Design-led brands lean matte.

6. Where Specification Goes Wrong
The most common error is specifying mirror on a shape with tight interior curves. Very small radii are harder to polish to a full mirror, and the result is a tool that looks bright overall with slightly duller interior detail.
The second is mixing finishes within a set. If a set contains mirror and satin pieces, that should be a deliberate design decision rather than a production accident.
The third is asking for a coloured finish on a tool that will be cleaned with abrasives. The coating is durable, but abrasive cleaners are the one thing that shortens its life.

Can matte be produced on every shape?
Nearly all. Very tight interior detail is the main limitation, and we will confirm before production.

Yes. Finish comparisons are a normal part of sampling, and we recommend choosing before production rather than after.
